Research Tidbits/Conclusion – May 21st

The Research Week has come to its end. First off, I just want to thank all of you who have participated! Your participation has helped me (and others, I’m sure) do some research for their novels. More than that, when you submit your research to the RRW, other writers will be able to see your research and use it for their own novels as well! So, thank you so much.

Despite the Research Week being officially over, I think I’ll still keep researching for a little while, since I procrastinated I didn’t research all the topics I wanted to, and I encourage you all to keep researching as well. It is so helpful in making your writing realistic and believable, and you’ll just learn more!

Oh, and one more thing before I share my research-y quote and a little about it: in about a week, I’m going to make a post with links to all the research that was done this week. So during this coming week make sure to get all the research you did together and submit it to the RRW, and once it’s been added to the site, comment with the link(s) here. Then we shall all be able to look at each other’s research!

Now, for the quote:

research quote 2.png

I really love this quote, because I think it describes what we do with writing in a beautiful way. Writing is realistic and unrealistic at the same time. Relatable, believable even, and yet fantastical.

Because when you write, what you’ve researched doesn’t have to be the truth. That’s what imagination is, that’s what writing is. You find the truth and twist it. You go back to a decision that was made and change it. You warp everything just a little, and immerse your readers in the magic that you’ve created.

Research, knowledge, experience, that’s the baseline. You need it so that you can have somewhere to push off from, a reference to look back at, but the beautiful thing about writing is that you can see it from a new perspective.

Research makes the story believable, and imagination is what makes it beautiful and interesting.

So when you look back at your research, try to “think what nobody else has thought”. Isn’t that why we write, anyway? To show a new perspective, to show how things could be or might have been.

It’s a beautiful thing, to imagine, to write, to share, and when that is supplemented with research and realism…you might even be able to change the world.

How has the Research Week gone for you? How much did you get done? What have you been most excited about learning? (I’m researching castles right now!) Tell me, why do you write? And don’t forget to share the links to your research once you get them!

Um … oh, I did great! I researched stuff. *nods*… and I didn’t really. XD To be fair, we had a kinda busy week … but still.

Hehe, that’s alright. It’s the thought that counts! Anyhow, you can do the research once you get your books anyway.

I will. I really need to know more about autism. Ivy just sounds like a normal kid in my novels. A little shy, but otherwise, really normal.

I should probably learn more about autism, especially since a couple of my cousins have autism. My cousins are not like Ivy at all and quite loud, but I think there are different types of autism. I’ll look forward to your research on it!

Yeah, that’s actually the type (well … if “loud” can be called a type …) I know most about because of that book … what was it called? Rules, maybe? Idk. But I’m assuming there is a quiet type of autism. XD At least …….. I really hope so. Not that I want people to have autism, but that I want there to be a type of autism that is what Ivy is … ok, this is coming out weird.

I think there is a quiet type of autism, and I understand what you’re saying. Ivy just doesn’t have a loud personality, so that type wouldn’t really work for her.

Yep. The book is in the library now, but we haven’t gone into town in forever. XD I should protest against not being able to drive without an adult until you’re 16. 😉

Haha, I don’t know if that’s a good idea. Driving is extremely frightening. I mean, I’m sure I’ll get used to it sometime but…I actually don’t like it very much.

I really enjoy it, actually. But, then, I have a somewhat dangerous amount of confidence.

Well, I think a lot of people enjoy it. I’m probably one of the few that doesn’t…I’m getting a little more used to it though, so that’s good.

Yep. It’ll probably become second nature real fast! (technically I’m not even supposed to be driving yet …)

I definitely wish I researched more about medical conditions. I’m so darned intrigued by that kind of stuff. But I’m glad I actually submitted an acceptable (for me) amount of stuff, and I actually researched.

Ooh, medical conditions would be really interesting, ‘specially since I know practically nothing about them. I think that’s one of the main things I’ve realized this week — there are so many hundreds of avenues of research that I think would be so interesting to learn about whether or not to relate to my novel, and that’s awesome.

And yay! I’m glad your research went well and that you entered in your submissions! (I think you’re the only one who did two submissions, actually, so good job!)

I am thinking about just continuing my research week a little bit. I love researching medical conditions and medical stuff in general. It’s just my field of interest XD
Thanks, I’m glad about it too! Wow, okay. I still wish I did more, haha. But thanks!

I think I’ll be continuing some more research too (though I haven’t decided what about, exactly). And I’ll look forward to learning about new medical conditions and stuff! They are really interesting.

        Hehe, you’re welcome.

I made a plan to research elevator mechanics, realized I didn’t necessarily need that information, and so didn’t research anything at all whatsoever.

    Oops.

Okay, that’s not totally true. I researched crime fiction and that was basically useless—for me, anyway. There might be something useful for someone else.

The only thing I know for sure I need to research at this point is PTSD, because I’m fairly certain Ceveth has it.

Oh gosh, this right here –> “Research makes the story believable, and imagination is what makes it beautiful and interesting.” is the most TRUE THING OF EVER AND I LOVE IT AND 100000% AGREE. *nods sagely* I didn’t participate in this, but YAY that it was such a success!! I’ve been quietly doing a bit of research lately but once I finish editing this draft I’m actually looking forward to researching for my next book. Fun Russian folklore. EEEEP. 😀

Thanks for stopping by @ Paper Fury!
