Rambles on Writing

There have been so many thoughts going through my mind recently about writing and my writing journey, so this probably isn’t really going to be a post about Enhanced like I was planning for it to be. (But that’s okay, one of my February dares was to blog what I want to, so I will.) But I will give you a status update on it! And hopefully a post about it soon.

Current Word Count: About 38,350-ish. The exact count should be on the sidebar. Which is about 32% of my goal. I think that’s around where the plot is…*shrugs*

But the problem is that I’m starting to get bored of it… I love my characters and talking about them, but right now I feel like the plot is really…suffering. I mean, I have a plot, but it’s not very prevalent, and the whole book is very character-heavy so far without much action. The first draft of Enhanced was basically the opposite–all action and no character development, so I know I need to find a balance between the two.

The thing is, I’m not sure how long it will take me to find that balance. Do I work on developing that for a little while instead of actually writing so that I can try to fix it, or do I finish this draft because I want to finish it and move onto other things? Don’t get me wrong, I still love the novel, I just…I’m tired of it, like I said.

Another problem is that I’m not sure how to fix it. I’m sure I’ll figure it out eventually, but I don’t know how to get to that point without totally changing the plot and maybe even the characters again. I thought I’d had the right plot this time, but now, writing it, it seems way too character-heavy…but maybe that’s how it’s supposed to be…gah, I don’t know.

So because of that, I’m instead working on this really dark short story that I started a long time ago with lots of characters who are devious and murder each other. Fun, right? I do enjoy it, but I keep adding more characters and it’s getting longer and longer…already it’s over 15 pages… *nervous laughter*

But when I finish that, I’ll be looking for some people to read it and tell me what they think about it, so if you like the sound of it, then keep that in mind. (Of course, I could procrastinate on the story again for a few months and not come back to it for a while, so don’t get too excited.)

And then…well, I decided to get over my fear of sharing my writing with my family and share some of my novels with my dad to read. So I gave him a list with a little summary of each of them and he decided he wanted to read Raven, my very first novel.

And it just so happened to end up that sometime around chapter five, he started reading it out loud to both me and my younger brother. At first, I was a little bothered, but I love listening to him read, and he did such a great Kergan voice that I couldn’t help but let him keep going…

By a few chapters later, when he told us it was time for bed, my brother kept calling it “that amazing novel” even though he knew the name of it, and my dad said to me, “You know, this is first draft stuff and he’s saying that it’s amazing. That means you could probably start publishing for children really soon.”

I started to say, “I don’t want to publish for children,” thinking about Enhanced, but then my words were cut off as another thought came into my head–the idea I had for a middle grade novel about dragons that I had wanted to write for my little brother specifically.

And I do want to write it. I always knew Raven, despite it being my first novel and not that great in some ways, had a vibrancy and excitement about it that I’ve never been able to replicate…and I guess I feel that if I write that dragon book, for children, then it’ll bring some of that back. And, you know, the thought of publishing soon isn’t bad either.

So I’m in a bit of a quandary (I’ve been wanting to use that word for days now…). I want to finish Enhanced but I don’t want to work on it, in part because it seems actionless and has too much character development, especially when compared to a novel written for middle grade.

I’m thinking about writing the MG dragon novel for Camp NaNo in April since it should be shorter and I might actually be able to finish it in a month…so I think I might do that. Which means I should keep working on Enhanced, but the question is, should I keep writing or try to figure out what core elements need to be changed and…I don’t know, start rewriting it again?

Ugh, I don’t want to rewrite it again. Maybe there being too much character stuff isn’t a bad thing…? I think I might need someone to read what I have so far in order to tell me that. Any volunteers?

*headdesks* Any opinions, advice, comments, etc. are most appreciated since I’d love for help with this problem. Thanks for reading all of my complaining…hopefully next post will be much better and happier!

AGH MURDER AND DARKNESS SOUNDS AWESOOOOOOME And I feel you–I LOVE my charries but writing my outline is making me HATE my plot. 😦 I hope you’ll be able to find that balance! (I know, I’m very helpful.)
And aww, that last part, about your dad reading to your bros and your brother calling it that amazing novel and all that fluffy stuff is SO CUTE. I think you should write that MG dragon story for Camp! 🙂

YAYYYY A FAN OF DARK THINGSSS

I hope so too! (Seriously, just having someone to commiserate with is helpful! So thank you!)

Aww, I know! And I think I’m going too–I just have one character that I’m really struggling with and need to figure out and then I’ll basically be set (since I don’t want to outline too much on this).

        DARK THNGS ARE THE BEEEEEEEEST
        (Haha, no problem! 🙂 )
Ah, yes, charries. Once you get ’em figured out, everything else is a breeze. 😛

I AGREEEEE. I mean, sometimes I like fluffy things but dark things are great most of the time too.

Haha, true. Well, most of the time. But characters are pretty essential.

Yes, I like cute fluffy romance, but DARK THINGS ARE BETTER.

Characters are soooooo essential to a story. I think that plot, characters, and setting are extremely important. You can form a story off of those three, but no less.

TRUE. Unless you have fluffy romance AND THEN ALL THE DARK THINGS. That’s awesome. 😀

Yep! Those are always what I try to focus on when preparing a novel. Or revising or whatever I’m doing with it.

I actually liked Raven, too. But … I never finished it. *shamefaced* But I did think it was sweet. Aaaaah, your family sounds great!!! My brothers are like, “Your books are the worst. Your wasting time writing is worse than our wasting time playing video games.” XD

I’d take a look at Enhanced! I mean … I actually have a really busy city, and I’m having trouble balancing what I have now … eesh, I wish it was June! After June, I’m gonna have a lazy summer, but I’ve a lot of work first. :/ But yeah, I could do it!

Haha, well, I never finished Heirs of the Trunk, so…that’s all right. 🙂 And yeah, my little brother can be really annoying but he’s also really sweet at times. There’s a reason I haven’t shared my writing with my older brother, though…he can be much more critical. On the other hand, he does think it’s cool that I do write and spend my time that way, so…I’m sorry, I guess. 😛

Ahhh, Kell, you are amazing. I mean, I’m over here procrastinating and still not reading the novels you’ve sent me, and here you are offering to read mine! I’ll send it to you, but don’t worry about doing it if you don’t have time. 🙂

Well, my family is kinda dead to writing because my sister does it, and they figure it she can do it … haha, not really, but it’s been proved that writing is a feasible accomplishment … XD My mom is impressed, though, and she’s the more literary/smart person in the family (imho) so there’s that. 😛
Okay, I’ll try to read it ASAP! 🙂

Awwww. Well, my brothers are impressed because they haven’t written a novel, and my dad is impressed because he’s tried writing a novel and he knows the pain 😉 so my family is pretty impressed with me, hehe.

I have no idea how many I have … the number keeps going up and I’ve lost track of how hard it got … 😛 Just kidding. Honestly, I feel like I don’t want to be that person with ten kids, but I also want to have lots of kids … hmm. I guess I’ll just ask my husband what he thinks when I get married and go with that … 😉

I doubt I would. I have like really high standards for people related to me … so I feel like I would be the worst mother … I’d crush their dreams and structure their lives away. 😛

I don’t think so…besides, if you tried to structure their lives away I’m sure they’d be very rebellious and then it wouldn’t happen anyway. 😛

        Probably.

Okay, probably not. I don’t think your kids will run away from home.

You know, it’s really weird to think about you having kids. Or me having kids. Why does life go by so fast? *is having an odd philosophical moment*

I know! Having kids … it’s like decades away. But it’s not really. I could have children in ten years. I could have children in five years! Granted, that would mean I wouldn’t have college (much college) … but it’s possible. Just the possibility of it is scary … and then my grandma had a child when she was eighteen, so … that’s just so scary and kinda exciting but mostly scary.

o.O I could have kids in five years too. Or like three years. *finds this really weird*

Well, you could have kids while at college…it has been done.

Haha, yeah, mostly scary. I don’t want to get married for quite a few years…

Aw…I’d love to read it for you. Though maybe I’d kind of…forget it…*nervous laughter*
    I’m sure I won’t.
Oh, I’m planning a new story (a retelling about Snow White’s mother and the Evil Queen), because I abandoned my last one, because I felt it was a bit plotless. I don’t know if this is helpful, but sometimes it’s good to let go, and start on something new and exciting!

Haha, I totally get it. I’ve done the same thing to. And I think I’ve figured stuff out a bit, but if you still want to read it, I’ll send it to you because feedback is always good and you might notice something that I missed! But if you don’t, that’s all right too. I definitely understand.

Oooh, that sounds awesome! 😀 I love fairy tale retellings! And I definitely agree with that–that sometimes you have to move onto another story–but Enhanced has always been one to stick with me and…I don’t know, a part of me has to finish it.

*hand shoots up* I’m up for beta-reading the murdery short story, whenever you’re finished with it! And Enhanced, if you’d like!

I haven’t written for very long, so my advice isn’t exactly from lots of experience, but I think it might be helpful to take a break from Enhanced. Not necessarily a long one, but a week or so, and you can focus on something else during that time. After you’re done with the break (if you take one) you can look back at Enhanced and see what you think. It might help to clear your head a little, and help you figure out where you want to go from here.

(If you don’t need a break, though, since it seems to be going better according to your most recent post, then writing the MG novel for Camp NaNo seems like a good idea. You don’t need to completely stop on Enhanced or put off the book about dragons.)

Yay! I shall try to finish it sometime soon (since it is a pretty awesome short story). And Enhanced should go out for beta reading once I finish the first draft.

Well, considering how many days I didn’t write during February, it did account for a week or two of a break! But hopefully now I can get back into the groove now that I’ve figured a few things out.

(I think I’m going to do that! I’d love to finish it (the MG novel) in April, too, and give it to my little brother for his birthday in the summer.)
