Dragons + Viking Culture + Middle Grade = Camp NaNoWriMo

That’s right, friends, Camp NaNoWriMo is just around the corner (a.k.a. tomorrow), and today I’ll be sharing my novel idea with y’all!

As you can (hopefully) tell by the title, it’s a middle grade novel with dragons and a Viking-era setting, and what you didn’t know is that it also involves three banished children and a miniature, snarky dragon.

dragon novel blog header.png
I wrote those runes in on this picture; it means “dragon novel” in Nordic runes. The picture is a pretty good representation of a drake as well…

Who are the characters?

MIKAEL

Mikael is the main character. He’s quiet and creative, and he carries around a sketchbook with him. He has a big family and sometimes goes unnoticed, so he wants to become someone great that people will appreciate.

ASTA

Asta is the daughter of wealthy parents, and she’s extremely intelligent. She sees the world in a very direct and clear way, and she uses that to her advantage in order to get whatever she wants.

IZAK

Izak is a bit of an outcast compared to the other two. After his mother died, he and his father have been on their own. Consequently, he’s spent a lot of time out in the wild and knows how to survive.

LOKI

Loki is a drake (miniature dragon) who can talk and uses his clever wit to insult anyone around him. When that doesn’t work, he’ll bite them. He can be very influential and charismatic when he wants to be, but making jabs at other people is much more fun.

(I had a drawing of them, but Izak was drawn wrong, and the clothing was inaccurate for the time periods, so you don’t get to see it… Hopefully I can draw another one soon to show you!)

What’s the story about?

Well, here’s my synopsis:

The coming-of-age ceremony requires three children to work together to complete tasks, but even quiet Mikael knows that it’s not all about learning how to work together. Those who win are awarded with respect that no other child would receive–and with the loud, inconsiderate Izak in his group, Mikael is less than happy with their chances.

So when Asta, the third and cleverest member of the group, suggests taking one of the talking drakes with them, Mikael agrees, even though it’s not allowed. Everything falls apart during the competition, and when the drake is found with them, the three of them are banished for a week–the three children and the drake, Loki.

Away from their home for the first time, they find out what lies beyond the cliffs–runes and ruins that lead to secrets that have lain hidden for hundreds of years.

They must work together and develop friendship in order to uncover the deepest secrets and stop the forces that are combining against them.

It’s all very friendship-y and touchy-feely, but hey, it has a good message for middle-graders, right?

I’m very excited to write this! It came about partially because dragons but also because I wanted to write something for my younger brother. It should hopefully be short and sweet and maybe with a hint of plot twist

¡Háblame! (Speak to me!)

What do you think of the novel? What is your project about for Camp NaNo? Are you ready to write like crazy tomorrow? Do you like dragons? (If you say no, something drastic might happen…) What does your candy stash look like?

P.S. Because of this post, I’ve decided to try increasing my blog’s readability. I think my post is definitely more readable than others, but I feel like my voice has faded and this post was not as exciting as it should have been, since I love this project. Feedback? I would love to find a good balance and improve my blog.

P.P.S. If you are wondering where I’ve been, I went on choir tour (much fun!) and then I’ve also been procrastinating/frantically doing homework in the wee hours of the night/stealing the books my mom is reading/occasionally writing, all instead of blogging. Sorry?

What do you think of the novel?: it sounds great! And it’s like MG fantasy which I really adore even though I read next to none of it … oh, my gosh, I haven’t read Enhanced … I am the worst. Forgive me? But anyway, yes, it sounds exciting! I really like the character Loki. And Asta. Although … okay, this may be crazy but you might consider changing her name. Asta = Astrid … kinda similar. Idk. Ignore me …

What is your project about for Camp NaNo?: Uh … yeah. You know. XD

Are you ready to write like crazy tomorrow?: YES!!!!!

Do you like dragons?: heh, you should talk to my sister. Okay, so I have a appreciation of dragons and I don’t want to end up on the wrong end of one, but I don’t think I’m a huuuuge fan … I mean, they’re neat … but I have … no feelings. They’re cool. I have nothing else to say.

What does your candy stash look like?: uh … what candy stash? I have no cash and cash buys candy and yep …

Feedback?: yeah, it was definitely shorter. *nods* And not really so … you. It was easy to read. But … I don’t know. I kind of miss the old Lana just ’cause … it’s you and I love your posts! I mean, maybe it’s better this way but … I miss your rambling and such. XD Maybe organization ain’t for everyone? Idk.

And obviously you can’t blog on a choir tour. *nods* 😛

Why, thank you! I have fond memories of MG fiction, but I don’t really read it anymore…although I am reading an MG now ’cause it has little references and funny bits for older readers as well. And yes, of course you are forgiven for not reading Enhanced. 😛

You’re right, Asta and Astrid are really similar (actually, I looked it up and Asta is apparently a shorter form of Astrid which is a form of Ástríðr (Astridr, if the special characters don’t work) and so I decided her name is actually Ástríðr and she goes by Asta). Anyway, I looked at a few other Norse names, but I still like Asta the best from her, and she is pretty different than Astrid from How to Train Your Dragon. I’ll face it that a lot of my readers will probably be like “Wow, she just got that from HTTYD.” (Well, maybe I did…my subconscious likes to steal things from other places…)

YAY! How has your crazy writing been going? I mean, I can see that you have written more than me (*claps*), but is the story itself coming along well?

That’s all right, you don’t have to love them. You have your dogs, and I have my dragons. 😉

What, you didn’t get a job yet? That was one of your dares a few months ago, isn’t it? *is offended by your lack of dare-following-through* *is extremely hypocritical* 😛

Haha, thankee for your opinion! I definitely agree with you. I liked the readability (and bolding random bits of text kind of felt like art a bit) but I do need to bring back my voice because I’m definitely a supporter of the idea that the more you love something then the more other people will love it too. So I shall work on improvement.

      Obviously. 😛

Yeah, I guess you shouldn’t change it if you really like it … I mean, gosh, you didn’t steal it from HTTYD CONSCIOUSLY, so … but yep, I have a lot of things in my books like that … and I never change them.
Okay. I got 1,400 words, which is pretty good f0r Camp if I do say so myself. 😉 But yep, it’s going pretty well. I like the beginning, which rarely happens for me. 😛
It was a New Year’s Goal … but it probably won’t happen ’cause I can’t drive myself anywhere until August. XD

Hehe, yeah. I mean, maybe I should change that the drake’s name is Loki, considering all of the Thor movies (that I’ve never watched) but oh well.

Yay! Liking the beginning is always awesome.

Aww. I’m hoping to get a job this summer, but we’ll see how that goes…

Anyway, I’ve been thinking about it, and I think I’m changing his name to Aki. I’ve been using it for a day or so by now, and I feel like it’s working much better.

What do you think of the novel?: It sounds super awesome! Dragons = yes.
What is your project about for Camp NaNo?: Well, it’s called If Memory Serves, and I’ll be discontinuing it after Camp. (I’m giving it a parting gift of hopefully 17.5K words, aka me practicing my writing stamina).
Are you ready to write like crazy tomorrow?: NO I AM NOT I HAVE TO WRITE 583 WORDS A DAY TO KEEP UP WUT.
Do you like dragons? (If you say no, something drastic might happen…): Um, who doesn’t???
What does your candy stash look like?: My madre doesn’t allow candy. 😥

This post was definitely shorter and more easily readable (personally, posts EXPLAINING things are quite dry if done not-so-well (but yours was good don’t worry)), however, I agree with Kell: You still must use your voice! It’s what makes your blog your blog. 😉

YOU CAN DO IT, MAY. I BELIEVE IN YOUUUU!

Nooooo candy is the way I get through the month. *pats* *offers virtual chocolate*

Thankee for your thoughts! I agree…I’ll need to work on keeping my voice and my readability next time. 😀

That’s awesome! 😀 My writing has been pretty good–I’m just about on track with 4100 words. I’m going to get to the point where I don’t know what’s happening in the story, though, and then I’ll probably end up slowing down a bit…

Kind of, but not really. I usually make sure I have a really basic plot in my head and try to explain why things happen before I start writing (doing some character and setting development) but my writing always tends to evolve a little bit as I write, so I can’t stick to a strict outline. I should probably do a bit more, though… You?

It depends on my mood. I’ve learned, I get lost in the middle somewhere without some type of outline. I make sure to outline a few key points at he very minimum, but what happens is after I write the beginning, I always end up writing a detailed outline through that part. It’s the hardest for me.

Middles are so difficult! I can write a good beginning (I mean, I’ve had a lot of practice at THAT), and I can write a decent ending, but building up to that…that’s the hardest part.

Maybe I should try your method though…then since you’ve written the beginning, you can have an idea of where the middle is going to go.

Well, in their village they have this drakehouse where a bunch of drakes live and…I dunno, do stuff. 😛 But that doesn’t really come into play. However, there are big dragons that they find out about later which will be fabulous and important to the plot. I’m so excited!

Basically, for years there has been this underrated practice called Dragoncology. One day, however, the king of their country (Alluris) decides that dragons are TOO DANGEROUS and he outlaws them. He kills dragons, and sends the dragoncologists to jail. The daughter of two dragoncologists, Tilley, finds a small dragon, and decides that she will not let the slaughter of dragons go on any longer.
