Spotlight #6: Meet Samuel (Iris, Part 2)

spotlight 6.png

Spotlights: excerpts, commentary, and random stuff about my current writing. Previous Spotlights can be found here.

If you remember the last Spotlight, I introduced to you a new story that I’ve been calling Iris but will probably be called something else (The Flower of Esclia?). Well, it was supposed to be a short story, but I have 17,000 words so far and it’s still not done.

So it’ll probably be more of a novelette/ novella.

Anyway, I told you about some characters last time, and today you get to meet a new one! His name is Samuel, and he’s quite fantastic. He’s the son of a travelling merchant and was Rosie’s and Iris’s childhood friend. He’s perceptive and…I don’t know how to describe him. You’ll have to read the excerpt.

Random updates on the current writing: The story keeps getting more complicated. Shippiness is at an all-time low between Garic and Iris, but don’t worry, it’ll get better. And I basically have no idea what I’m doing anymore, so I’m making it up as I go along.

All right, all right, I’ll give you the excerpt.

A few minutes later, Samuel sat down next to her and flicked the reins, starting the horses into an easy walk. “The prince is in the back…but he’s right, you know. It looks like it might snow.”

Iris tilted her head to the sky, blanketed with clouds so that neither stars nor moon could be seen. “Maybe.”

“So what’s this about Rosie?” asked Samuel.

This was not how she wanted him to find out. If anything, she didn’t want him to find out at all. Rosie would be better in his memories as free and unfettered, not crippled and locked away in her room. “Last time you and your father left…”

“Yes?”

“About a month later, there was an…an accident.”

Samuel turned to her, dark eyes filled with pain. “What happened?”

Iris took a deep breath. Better to get it over with quickly. “A carriage driver lost control and one of his horses nearly killed Rosie. She survived but…but she has no movement below her neck.”

He was breathing heavily, and she thought she could see the memories running through his mind. Their times together had always been filled with physical activities, with running wild through the streets in a race, or playing tug-of-war, or dancing in the lantern glow of the autumn festival.

That had been the last time Samuel had been there, and Rosie had practically glowed all through those two weeks. And at the end was the festival, where the musicians played and the people of Eyspar danced, and Samuel and Rosie had spent half the night together, spinning around each other and whispering and laughing.

Looking at him, Iris knew that was exactly the memory in his eyes.

“She’s pulled through, though,” she whispered. “You know Rosie…she can find happiness in every situation. I don’t know how she does it, but she does.”

Samuel didn’t answer for a long time, the silence filled by the wind in the grass and the quiet clopping of the horses’ hooves on the dirt road. Finally he spoke. “It’ll be warmer in the wagon. You should go inside.”

It was easy to tell that he wanted to be left alone, so Iris nodded, and he stopped the horses so that she could climb inside.

The wagon was cluttered with wares and barrels and a dim lantern hung in the corner, swaying, illuminating Garic in the only clear spot, leaning against the wall.

She sat down as far away from him as she could, which was only a few feet, and looked down at the ground.

“You’ve been crying,” said Garic.

Of course he’d notice the one thing that she was trying to hide. But what did it matter? It didn’t change the fact that Rosie was never going to stand or walk again. That she could never be who she was once before.

“We haven’t seen Samuel for over a year,” she whispered. “He didn’t know about—” Her voice broke. “About Rosie.”

Iris glanced up at Garic, bathed in warm lantern light, extending his arms to her.

Tonight, when the wind whistled sorrowfully and Samuel’s heart was breaking, she let herself go to him. Tonight he held her, and his solidity dampened the pain, made it bearable.

Tomorrow she would push him away again, tomorrow, but tonight…tonight she let her silent tears fall on him until she fell asleep.

lettuce talk (hahaha I’m so clever)

What do you think of the Spotlight/excerpt/Samuel/everything? Does the block quote format make the text too big? (I’m kind of thinking so.) If you could put the characters into any situation & observe their reactions, what would it be? And randomly, how are you today? What’s been the best part of your day/week?

Lana, I had this whole, long comment typed up and then the internet went off just as I posted it and I lost it! *sobs* Now you’ll never hand my beautiful word … 😛

Okay, let’s see … what did I say … I answered your questions. I can remember that, at least.

What do you think of the Spotlight/excerpt/Samuel/everything?:
I liked it! A lot, actually. I was heartbroken. Especially the last couple paragraphs … I was almost in tears, I swear! And I really liked Samuel, though Garic and Iris are my favorites, along with Rosie. Rosie is just so sweet! I don’t think she’s the kind of character you empathize with so much as love to death, but she’s sooo amazing! And I really liked Garic.

Does the block quote format make the text too big?:
I actually don’t find the text too big. In fact, I think it’s just the right size. It makes reading easier, which is awesome. However, don’t listen to me; I’m good with reading practically any format.

If you could put the characters into any situation & observe their reactions, what would it be?:
I think I’d put them in a stressful situation. Or … ooh, maybe I’d have one of them betray the others … or have the others think one of them betrayed them … something like that. That’s always “fun.” 😛

And randomly, how are you today? What’s been the best part of your day/week?:
I’m good! Me and my brother are watching Pirates of the Caribbean. I love Keira Knightley. I’m sorry, but she is such a great actress! I really like her. (Oh, shush … don’t comment …)

I had a band concert this week! It was fun, but completely stressful, so today I’m suffering from PCSD (post concert stress disorder). *nods*

Oh nooooo. INTERNET HOW DARE YOU. I’M VERY OFFENDED.

Oh yay, I’m glad you liked it! 😀 And true…Samuel is great, but he’s not quite up to par with the rest of them. Rosie’s a little bit too perfect, but she’s awesome. And Iris and Garic are just my favorite. 😉 (Okay, I’m basically repeating what you just said. But I feel the same way! 😛 )

Haha, so I should just put all of my posts into the block text format? 😛

Oh no…but which character would they think betrayed them? Because that makes a difference…even though all of them have pretty horrible outcomes.

Oooh, that sounds like fun! 🙂 And no, hopefully you get over from PCSD soon! *gives virtual cookies to help with that*

YES I KNOW THE INTERNET SHOULD DIE! (not literally, but …)

Well, at least we agree, even if we agree repetitively … *coughs*

        Uh … I guess? I mean, maybe not … I don’t know …

I … don’t know? It was just a random idea. So … maybe Samuel? (I just say that ’cause I’m not so attached to him as I am to the others 😛 )

        IT SHOULD JUST DIE FIGURATIVELY
        A GRUESOME, HORRIBLE DEATH

*coughs* ‘Cause, you know, repetitiveness. 😛

Haha, I was joking. 😛 Unless you knew that & you were joking too… man, I just made this awkward.

Ooh, hmm. I think Iris and Garic would be more likely to believe it than Rosie. And she’d still want to trust him but they’d be saying it’s for the best that they found out and everything…and it would be sad. 😦

Ooh, a read cookie…like a cookie book? I want a cookie book! Just kidding. 😛 How did your quest for a cookie turn out?

        A NOT-LITERALLY BLOODY, SHOCKING DEATH!

Whoa, that was … gory. Not very gory, but still … 😛

Yes, it would be very sad! Heartbreaking. :/

Agh, typos … but yeah, I wasn’t able to find one. I guess I’ll have to make some …

YES. EXCEPT I DON’T KNOW IF THE INTERNET HAS BLOOD.

        Indeed… 😛

…yup, would be interesting to write, but I’m not going to. I’m finding it hard enough to finish the story as it is…especially since my goal is to finish it this week.

Hehe, and awww. Yep, you should make some! And, you know, mail them to me or something. 😛

Yeah, I don’t expect you to follow my crazy writing prompts. Weeeell, not all of them, at least. 😛 😉 Good luck finishing it!

OH MY GERSH YOU ARE AN AMAZING WRITER LANA. ❤ Also that pun is just the best. XD

First of all, AGHAGHAHG IT'S SO SAD AND DEPRESSING AND BEAUTIFUL. Second of all, maybe the text is a LITTLE too big??? And I was going to say something else but I forgot. Basically, I feel like I could read this in a book because it's just that amazing. ❤

Yay, I’m glad you enjoyed it! And yeah, I’m thinking that about the text size too, but I don’t know if there’s a way to change that. (I mean, I can’t even find the spot where to change the normal text size. I feel like it should be obvious but I can’t find it anywhere. 😛 ) Thanks for ze comment!

You can’t change text size “normally” — you have to go to the HTML coding stuff. 😛

Wow, Lana! What a heartfelt scene! The emotions come through so loud and clear; I’m touched. If I could describe how Samuel seems to me, it would be that he’s independent and emotional, but resistant to letting others in on it. Does that sound accurate to you as the author?

Yeah, I think that the quote format just doesn’t cater for quotes of that length. That said, I didn’t *really* notice how “bad” it looked until you pointed it out.

I realize the spotlight is about Samuel, but I’m actually more intrigued about Iris and Garic. I would like to see them in “tomorrow”. Does Iris succeed in her resolve to push him back? Is Garic aware of her resistance, or is he just hopelessly in love?

What a refreshing question to ask how we are and to feel that you mean it. Just saying. 😉 I’ve had a very busy day and week, which I find a pity because it feels like this is a rut that I’m stuck in. There’s just not end to the list of things that need to be done. God is sufficient, though – always sufficient. Are there particular promises from His Word that you hold to when there just seems to be too much pressure to get too many things done?

Thank you! And yes, that sounds exactly like Samuel! I’m glad his personality shown through and you were able to pick up on it. 🙂

Thanks for the feedback! I think I’m going to try making it a little bit smaller next time (apparently, I’ll have to mess around with the HTML, but hopefully I can figure it out).

I’m really happy that you’re interested in the “tomorrow” of the story. Things are kind of at odds for them from this point on. Iris is afraid of her feelings, and so she mostly avoids Garic. He notices, but there’s not much he can do about it. Or, at least, nothing really effective that he can do about it. 😉

I know I’m responding late, but I hope your busy week has gotten better by now! There are always so many things to do… but yes, there are so many amazing scriptures. One of my favorites is John 14:27–

Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.

I also love John 16:33 and Isaiah 53:3-5–how wonderful is God’s plan for us, that He sent His Son to suffer so that he can heal us? It’s amazing.

There’s a scripture about that in the Book of Mormon, too, that I love. Alma 7:11-13:

11 And he shall go forth, suffering pains and afflictions and temptations of every kind; and this that the word might be fulfilled which saith he will take upon him the pains and the sicknesses of his people.

12 And he will take upon him death, that he may loose the bands of death which bind his people; and he will take upon him their infirmities, that his bowels may be filled with mercy, according to the flesh, that he may know according to the flesh how to succor his people according to their infirmities.

13 Now the Spirit knoweth all things; nevertheless the Son of God suffereth according to the flesh that he might take upon him the sins of his people, that he might blot out their transgressions according to the power of his deliverance; and now behold, this is the testimony which is in me.

And I also love Revelation 21:3-4, about what we can be given if we are faithful! It is such a glorious promise.

What are your favorite scriptures about that?

How hypocritical it would be of me to hold it against you for replying late! I feel like that’s become my habit recently. But the fact that you took some time to write back makes me wonder if you have a lot on your plate, too. If you do, I sympathize. If not, well then my bad.

My favorite verses… relating to business? Exhaustion? Hmm, probably Matthew 11:28-30

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”

I also think now of Mathew 6:33

But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.

Well, mainly I have been busy with vacation and things like that, but I do have quite a few things that I’m trying to balance…it’s hard to prioritize when you want to do so many different things!

Oh, those are awesome verses. I especially love that one from Matthew 11. God can lift us even in our heaviest of times!

Oh, balancing things! I know! I have a huge problem with not saying no to favors/requests, and now I’m learning just how harmful of a problem it is. It puts a strain on all my other commitments. Those other many things that you want to do; are they things you’ve agreed to do for others, or projects you’ve taken on purely because you want to?
